Interests: Honestly I am fascinated in building this entire alternate world history to fit Katniss in. She was sort of born to help with rebellions and changing the world as a character - I want to see how she helps change the world when she doesn't have anything to lose, and everything to gain. I also want to have her develop relationships outside of her own canon, deep and meaningful ones, giving her something to fight for once more.

Canon World

The original Katniss Everdeen came from a country called Panem, that was split into twelve districts (thirteen originally), that were all subject to the rule of the Capital, which governed with an iron fist. Well over one hundred years ago the Capital defeated the other Districts in an all out war, and obliterated the 13th District, or so they believed. In punishment for rising against the Capital, the Districts were forced to send out one boy and one girl, between the ages of twelve and sixteen, to fight in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games was a technologically created area where the twenty six contestants would enter, face different kinds of perils and one another. The one who won became a Victor, someone who would train the next year's chosen boy and girl from then on out.

Katniss changed this world by forcing them to choose two Victors, herself and her fellow District 12 schoolmate and the boy who was in love with her, Peeta Mellark. This began district-wide revolts against the Capital, again sparking into another civil war, but this one then led by Katniss and a re-emerging District 13. Katniss and her army eventually defeated the Capital, but not without heavy losses on both sides.

Katniss's Canon History

A Hunter's View Of The Mage Templar War

Healers Notes

- Katniss Everdeen's parents were Hermann Everdeen, a miner in the winter and a hunter in the warmer months in the Hinterlands, and the Dalish healer, Me'lan of Clan Rosehigh in the year 9:20 of the Dragon Age. The two met when Hermann saved Me'lan from a bear attack, while she was gathering herbs for the clan. They shared his cabin for a month together while Me'lan healed from her wounds, and spent the last week of that month together as lovers. By that time, Hermann had fallen in love withe Me'lan, but she would not leave her clan. She left early one dawn, leaving only a katniss flower on her lover's pillow.
- One year later, she returned with three month old baby girl, whom Me'lan left in Hermann's care. She could not raise a half-human, half-elven child in her clan. Hermann rose to the task, loving his daughter all the more for being half of himself, and half of the elven woman he still loved. He named her Katniss, after the blossom Me'lan left behind. Me'lan visited through the spring and the summer, but left as her clan did in the fall. She would return every year when the flowers began to bloom. While she was away, Hermann taught his daughter how to survive out in the forest, and how to hunt. She held her first small bow when she was four.
- In the year 9:26, when Katniss was five, her mother returned again with another baby daughter, who was born when the roses first came into bloom. She was named Primrose, and Katniss loved her more than anything. Together, she and her father helped raise Primrose.
- In 9:30, the Darkspawn killed Hermann while he was out hunting for food near Redcliffe. Katniss, who was out hunting with him, picked up her father's bow and slayed the two monsters in grief and anger. She then grabbed Primrose and headed into Redcliffe, where they lived in the Chantry. Katniss, all of ten years old, held her father's bow and helped fend off the undead. She stayed on as a village guard, until the Hero of Fereldan defeated the Archdemon, and sanity had been restored to the land.
- In the winter of 9:31, she stopped going to the local Chantry for lessons, as she had to support herself and Primrose. Sshe would still visit the in the odd hours to light a candle for her father, and in the woods she would sing the songs to the old Elven Gods that her mother had taught her. It eased her grief, as did the love of Prim.
- In the spring 9:31, when Me'lan returned, she went into violent mourning for her human lover, curling up on their bed and not speaking or moving. When she emerged, she told Katniss she would not bring her children with her to the clan. Instead, she taught Katniss and Primrose all she could about healing herbs, and how to survive alone, as the Dalish did. Katniss, angry at her mother, only took the knowledge on what they needed to survive, and what herbs to make into simple potions to sell, but Primrose had a natural aptitude for healing. She soaked up everything her mother had to teach her.
- Me'lan's visits continued for five years, until Me'lan did not come the sixteenth year of Katniss's birth. The girls never knew what happened to their mother. Only Primrose openly mourned her.
- The same year, 9:36, Katniss had quickly become one of the finest hunters in the Hinterlands. She used the silver and gold she raised from the selling of her furs and meat, to apprentice Primrose to the old healer at the Crossroads. It cost much more than the other boy apprentice, because of the half-blood censure that Katniss and Primrose lived under.
- In 9:41, the Breach opened Rifts all over the area. Katniss went the long way across the mountains to gather healing herbs and get supplies from the dwarven traders on the western side of Lake Callenhad. She had to go that way to avoid the demons, the apostates and the templars. When she returned, a month later she found her sister had been killed during a battle between the mages and the templars. The Inquisition had then arrived to 'save them all'. Yet Redcliffe was scarred from the Venatori, her family was dead and there was literally nothing left for her in the place that was once her home. The Inquisition asked for volunteers in the war, and wishing to meet her end fighting instead wallowing in grief, she joined.

Personality

When you first meet Katniss, she will come off as cold and aloof, prickly even. There will be moments, though, when someone calls her a blunted-knife ear, is threatening one of the servants, or if someone states that the templars or mages had their reasons to rebel and cause wide-spread panic, that will spark something deep inside of her - so be prepared for a passionate verbal response. It is that rage, that passion, that truly defines Katniss. She does not feel anything by halves - not anger, not love, not grief, not joy. You can see it in the flash of her grey eyes, the timber of her voice. Katniss Everdeen may not look like she feels anything at all, but underneath she feels everything, and it will bubble out of her like lava through a crack in the earth.

It is that passion, that protective mama bear rage that brings out the loyal side of her personality. She was fiercely devoted to her father, and equally to her sister. Whatever friends she manages to make will be treated to the same loyalty - she will not hesitate to step in front of a sword or arrow for them. She will stand by them, through almost everything to the point of murder, but even after she distances herself she will still care.

For loyalty and passion lead to what makes up Katniss's soul. Despite her coolness and her silences, her compassion reigns surpreme. She will share what she has with those less fortunate -- and she sees that in the city elves and village elves who have flocked to Skyhold. She sees that in the orphans left by the rifts and the mage and templar wars. She disdains her mother's people, the Dalish, but those who have known oppression as she has, who are below the notice of the most powerful? She will make sure they have everything they need - food, warm blankets, and poultices, even if she has to break some rules to get them. Or, you know, some windows. Possibly a lock if she can find a big enough rock or it can be broken off with an arrow.

In short, Katniss is a girl on fire, underneath an icy layer of grief and despair.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths

- Katniss is highly skilled with a bow and arrow. Around the Hinterlands, it was locally bragged that she could shoot the eye through a ferrec from over two hundred paces. They were not wrong - Katniss rarely misses her target.

- She can track, kill, skin and generally treat the meat and skin of any kind of animal. She also knows how to make use of every single part, thanks to her father and mother.

- She has an odd nose for which veins of stone are the strongest for mining, again, thanks to her father.

- Katniss is nearly silent in her attacks, a ghost when moving through any area. Years of training with her father have taught her where to step, how to move, and when not to do either.

- She is also faster, and lighter on her feet. Some of this is genetics from her mother's blood, some of this is training from walking or running over the hills of the Hinterlands for all of her life.

- She has an extensive knowledge of herbs, how to brew them and what to use in the field.

- She is resilient; no matter what has been thrown at her, she keeps going. Even if she has been broken down to her knees, she will keep crawling forward. She is a survivor.

- She is compassionate and generous, to the less fortunate, and that garners her a lot of good will with those whom she normally would not be able to get along with.

Weaknesses

- Her education, at best, is spotty. She can read fairly well, but she cannot write with any grace, wit, or sometimes spelling. Her math skills are also basic.

- She is blunt to the point of being rude. That often means it is hard to get to know her, much less like her. She doesn't have time for flowery nonsense.

- She is stubborn; not going to get a wound treated unless she is near death, or not believing someone else's plan is best until she has seen it in action.

- She can be cold and calculating, looking for the angle that will benefit her and her people most, even if it doesn't benefit everyone.

Arrival Inventory

Katniss will have the following when she arrives at Skyhold

- Bow, and several quivers filled with homemade arrows.
- A bedroll.
- A pot.
- Flint and stone.
- Changes of simple hunter's leathers, one pair of very fine hunter's boots, and undergarments.
- Hunting knife.
- A butter-colored Fereldan Forder, bought while she was trying to hurry home to her sister. His name is Haymitch, and he only likes Katniss.
- A cat named Buttercup. Her sister's former pet - he doesn't even like Katniss but he hates the rest of you more.
- A lantern.
- Food.
- Furs, meats, and herbs that she will trade for other supplies as needed, or share.
- A very well worn copy of Brother Genetivi's seminal work, a gift she had given to Primrose.
- A golden pin, with a mockingbird in flight emblazoned on it. It was her father's, and has been in their family for ages.
'Human'ization

Katniss is half human, and half elven, which means she has the height of a normal human woman, but she is on the whip-thin side with her elvish blood. Her ears of course, are just rounded, and she has smaller, human eyes of steel grey, although they are slanted as most of the elvish blood are. She wears her dark hair in a complicated braided style over one shoulder.

Fit

I chose Katniss for this game because I believe this is a struggle that her character would willingly put herself forward for, especially after losing her family. She hates war, but she will fight it to protect those who cannot protect themselves. That is practically the Inquisition's coda, and I believe Katniss would be a strong member who would encourage others in the fight, no matter how weary she was. She could be a leader in her own right - like Cassandra, or even Cullen.

I also think with the background that I've created for her, given her a reason to be an advocate for all the 'misfit toys' of the Inquisition. The orphaned children, the city elves and even the Tranquil - I can see her being a rallying cry that you cannot ignore the victims. She might fit in well with Sera's doctorine, or even with Solas's, if he had need for a half-elf in his larger scale of things. In any case, she will be a driving force for furthering equality on the lower end of the social scale, hoping to bring about balance in this rapidly changing world.
